There is a very direct correlation between hair loss and DHT. DHT is a hormone (the full name is dihydrotestosterone) that binds with receptor sites on the hair follicle cells. The result of this binding is a decrease in the hair growing cycle which in turn, means that each new hair growth is smaller and thinner. Over time, this results in significant hair loss and eventually, baldness.
Therefore, in order to combat hair loss, you need to find some sort of DHT blocker. DHT blockers include a variety of products that are able to halt the effects of DHT before it has the chance to shrink the hair follicles.
There is an enzyme found in the scalp called 5-alpha reductase. This enzyme combines with the male hormone, testosterone to produce DHT. DHT blocks essential nutrients that the hair follicles need in order to produce new hair growth. When there is too much DHT in the body, the hair follicles build at a slower rate. The combination of normal hair loss with slower reproduction of new hair follicles gives the result of hair loss. Therefore, DHT blockers serve to keep DHT from doing the damage that causes hair loss.
Over production of DHT is the leading cause of hair loss. Most DHT blockers stunt the formation and build-up of DHT in hair follicles so that blood flow to the follicles can be restored. With healthy blood flow to the hair follicles they are ale to get the nourishment they need to reproduce new hair.
DHT blockers can be taken both topically or ingested in the form of dietary supplements. In either case, you must be consistent with the regimen for a prolonged period of time in order to restore hair regrowth and see results.
Herbal supplements that work well as DHT blockers to combat hair loss include Saw Palmetto and Beta Sitosterol. Saw Palmetto will serve the purpose of preventing the formation of dihydrotestosterone from testosterone - resulting from the action of the 5-alpha-reductase enzyme. Beta Sitosterol is a plan compound that is similar in chemical make up to cholesterol. What is does is remove DHT from hair follicles so that regular blood flow can return to them. Both work well in combination with each other.
Most DHT blockers will also include B vitamins and the mineral Zinc. Many of the B vitamins have been shown in studies to support the production and growth of new hair. Zinc has also been shown to be effective in promoting the growth of new hair. Any DHT blocker should not only work to combat hair loss, but also work to nourish the root of the hair so that healthy regrowth is returned to a natural speed.
