The Nightmare of Losing Hair

Have you found your hair frequently piling up in tangles on your hairbrush? If so, you may have started worrying about losing hair. Losing hair is not a very pleasant discovery to make, particularly if it seems to be a regular occurrence showing no signs of letting up.

You must get to the bottom of the problem. Remember that it's absolutely vital to identify the cause. Generally speaking, losing hair is just a natural process by which hair is replaced once it has come to the end of its days, quite literally. About 10 % of our hair falls out naturally and on a regular basis. Normally it is replaced by a fresh growth. So if you find yourself losing hair, it isn't necessarily anything to be upset about.

First of all, examine the amount of hair you are losing to determine if it is more than usual. Then, if you think it is too much, pay attention to how long this excessive amount of hair loss continues. Occasionally, you may find your hair falling out faster than it is replaced, but even that can be expected once in a while. You should only be concerned if you are losing hair more than usual for a long period of time. Only after several months can you finally determine whether or not your problem is something to cause alarm.

Losing hair could have a great deal to do with hormonal fluctuations, as in the case of variations in the levels of the thyroid hormone. Then again, when levels of testosterone or insulin are high, you may find yourself losing hair as well. Similarly, there may be other conditions that disturb the normal pattern of hormonal activity which could manifest in the loss of hair.

Losing hair could also have something to do with an inflammation of the scalp, which can lead to troublesome conditions. Should this be the case, you may be at risk of developing infections on the scalp such as ringworm. There is also the possibility of developing folliculitis, a condition in which bacteria attack the hair roots.

Other reasons for losing hair could be the use of tight hair grips, which may cause your hair to break off. You may also feel the urge to scratch because of scalp irritation and this would also lead to your losing hair.

Adverse reactions to medication or psychological factors such as tension or anxiety will also cause you to lose hair. However serious your problem may seem, remember that if you are really worried about it, you can seek medical advice to find out why you are losing hair and what you can do about it.
