Dieting is one of the hardest things you may ever have to do, right up there with quitting smoking or drugs. Just like quitting smoking, dieting is something that many people will attempt more than once, and even after you reach your goal maintaining it is an ongoing process.
Low calorie dieting is effective, it does not take a nutritionist to figure out that if you consume fewer calories than you use per day over an extended period of time you will lose weight. The problem with low calorie dieting is that when you significantly reduce the amount of calories in your diet your metabolism slows down to compensate. The best way to counter this is with exercise. Not only is exercise good for weight loss in general because the added physical activity burns calories, but exercise also greatly boosts metabolism. Exercising while dieting will help ensure that you lose mostly fat rather than muscle mass. Losing muscle mass is quite bad for long term weight loss, because muscle tissue requires calories just to maintain itself. If you lose muscle tissue than you begin to burn fewer and fewer calories from the food you do eat. People who lose a good amount of muscle tissue while dieting will find that when they are finished their metabolism is much slower than when they began and will quickly put weight back on; but instead of putting on an equal amount of fat and muscle mass than was lost while dieting it will be mostly fat.
Dieting cannot be a grueling process for you, otherwise you will quit after a very short period of time. Even if you are successful in reaching your weight goals you should continue dieting in a less intense fashion for weight management purposes. As stated above, it is very important to exercise while dieting, but the exercise should not be something you cannot picture yourself doing on a continual basis. If it is too stressful you will eventually give up on dieting and gain weight again. Limiting your food to the point it is hard to bear will also result in you stopping your diet. The foods should be healthy but also tasty, the meals should be smaller but also satisfying. If you need help in this area while dieting a great helper is an appetite suppressant. Rather than using a harsh stimulant like phentermine, hoodia is a good alternative. Hoodia contains no stimulants but it is still has a very strong effect on hunger. One of the plus sides of hoodia is the fact it has no known side effects, making it a healthy alternative to most other appetite suppressants taken while dieting.
