In comparison to most other types of remedies and medications, the idea of a weight loss pill is relatively new. The first weight loss pills were developed in the early 1930s at the well known Stanford University. Since this time, it is estimated that seventy million people within the United States have taken a weight loss pill of one type or another. The first weight loss pills, known as DNP, worked by increasing body temperature so that food would be burnt off as heat instead of stored as fat. As it turned out, while this sort of weight loss pill was effective it was also a weight loss pill which was very unsafe and unstable. People using DNP weight loss pills were coming down with dangerously high fevers which among other things were causing blindness and death. Within a few years the sale of DNP was banned, though some people still use the weight loss pills illegally.
The next wave of weight loss pills to hit the market suppressed the appetite by stimulating the central nervous system. The earliest and still most widely used weight loss pills were amphetamines, but in the mid nineties the ephedra weight loss pill had become a big success. Unfortunately, despite the fact that the ephedra weight loss pill was all natural it still had a long list of negative side effects that are also associated with amphetamine weight loss pills. After a few high profile deaths from ephedra, the weight loss pills were banned. Amphetamine weight loss pills are still available by prescription, but are highly controlled and very rarely prescribed for a long period of time.
The best to come out so far is a recent innovation, the Hoodia weight loss pill. Although the plant Hoodia has been known to the Sans Bushmen of the Kalahari desert for hundreds of years the substance is very new to the rest of the world, and has been put in the form of a pure extract to make it an even more powerful weight loss pill. So far, the Hoodia appetite suppressing weight loss pill has not shown any side effects whatsoever and ranks at the top of the list for weight loss pills both in terms of safety and effectiveness.
