Resveratrol supplements are the newest thing in anti aging treatments and represent a huge scientific breakthrough. For more than twenty five years, doctors and medical researchers had been vaguely aware that a moderate, yet regular intake of red wine had positive effects on heart health as well as a few other aspects of overall health; but recently the active ingredient responsible for these benefits has been identified: Resveratrol.
Armed with this new information, scientists have created the Resveratrol supplement which is a concentrated extract of Resveratrol. Resveratrol supplements offer the substance in much larger quantities than you could get from whole foods; to get the same amount you would have to drink a few hundred to one thousand bottles of wine per day, or eat tens of thousands of peanuts. Resveratrol is also found in a generally inedible plant called knotweed which grows in Japan, though there are some Resveratrol supplements made of knotweed extract. By far though purple grapes have the highest concentration of Resveratrol, and therefore their extract makes the best Resveratrol supplements.
Active research into Resveratrol supplements began in 1999 when medical scientists began experimenting with its effects on diabetics. It was found to improve sensitivity to insulin, and in non-diabetics Resveratrol supplements were an effective preventative measure against diabetes. This is just the beginning of the positive effects of taking a concentrated Resveratrol supplement.
The clinical studies on Resveratrol supplements started with mice, then moved up to various primates. Athletic ability was improved, weight was much easier to control and life expectancy was longer. Organ function was greatly improved as well as many, many other positive changes. We all have a gene which is usually activated by low calorie intake. It can be described as a survival gene, when we are getting low amounts of sustenance it kicks in to make our bodies perform at their most efficient to preserve themselves. Resveratrol supplements were found to activate this gene without lowering the amount of food we eat. This means, in effect, we can enjoy the benefits of a low calorie natural diet without actually sticking to one.
While pharmaceutical companies like Sirtris, which was recently bought by Glaxo Smith Klein, must jump through hoops to have a pharmaceutical version of Resveratrol approved for use, natural Resveratrol supplements are available and completely safe and effective. At the moment there are a few varieties of Resveratrol supplements made of extracts from a few different sources. My personal recommendation, and a supplement I have been taking is Resveratrol Select which has shown itself to be of the highest quality currently available. Eventually there will be a much more refined Resveratrol supplement or drug available, but this could be between five to ten years away. Why wait to take advantage of Resveratrol supplements?
