Ativan is a lesser known prescription drug of the family of benzodiazepines, which also contains the drugs Xanax and Valium. Like Xanax, Valium and all benzodiazepines it is used in the treatment of anxiety and anxiety related insomnia. The first thing doctors will warn you about are the dangers of taking Ativan if you are allergic to Ativan; this is of course a no-brainer. Unfortunately there are many other conditions in which it could be dangerous to take Ativan and the drug has a long list of side effects.
Before I get into that, it is important to note that people taking Ativan can become dependent on the drug to relieve anxiety and to fall asleep. Because of the pleasing effects of Ativan addiction to the drug and other benzodiazepines is rampant; many people who begin taking the drug to relieve their anxiety continue to use it recreationally. When those who have been using Ativan for long periods of time try to stop they are met with the withdrawal symptoms. Shakes and tremors, vomiting and profuse sweating are common withdrawal symptoms associated with Ativan.
Ativan should also not be taken by pregnant or nursing mothers, which is the case with many prescription drugs, and should also not be taken by anyone with a liver disease of any type because it can be difficult for your body to break down and Ativan itself can cause liver complications. The common side effects of Ativan include dizziness, swelling, memory loss and occasionally severe allergic reaction.
Even as far as prescription drugs go Ativan's negatives usually outweigh its positives. Herbal calming remedies are widely available, without prescription and do not have any of the same risks attached to them. Unless you have a prescription drug plan with your place of employment, herbal remedies are often cheaper as well. Ingredients like Valerian and St John's Wort are good ones to look for when picking out a supplement for insomnia because of their great track record. St John's Wort is sometimes used clinically as well. Consult with your doctor about natural remedies before requesting a prescription drug for insomnia.
